Ok. Let’s get this straight. Spurlock made a movie where he criticised McD’s for manipulating the truth about its product through advertising, and exploiting children and making money as a result. And you guys got angry at McD’s. How dare they profit from exploiting others and manipulating the truth? Outrage!
But now Spurlock has exploited McD’s and manipulated the truth in order to sell his own product (the movie) and make a profit for himself. Are you guys angry and outraged that he would do such a thing? No? Why not? Can’t you at least see the irony? Shame on you.

Hiya Calvin Dude, good to see ya out and about. Bottom line ok, whatever the fringe benefits Morgan Spurlock might reap from the success of this movie, they in NO way whatsoever diminish the simple fact that His art has affected society in a positive way. People are talking about wise eating choices, are they not? ATB Joe

Hi there calvin, i have to say, and not just because you asked for it, but actually i have succesfully boycotted all fast food since seeing this movie, i was gaining weight a lot at one time and now know why, also, i wondered why even though i was exercising, why i was still gaining weight. Now i have cut this out, i am maintaining a good weight and feel much better for it. sorry about that.

I agree with Joe.
As a result of seeing this movie I no longer eat at McDonalds. More importantly, I no longer take my children to McDonalds. When we drive past the golden arches my kids say, "BAD McDONALDS! YUCKY McDONALDS!" Yes, McDonalds was the only fast food I ate. The other chains did not appeal to me. We have kicked the habit of weekly visits to the playland and I know there are people out there cheering for us and I would encourage others to do the same. It can be done. Get some Moms fired up and who knows what they can do. Call it MAFF, mothers against fast food.

The CEO dropped dead of a heart attack not long ago and his successor has colon cancer. We wont even mention the lawsuits from coast to coast and around the world. Does that sound like things are rosey at McDonald's?

I have cut back fast food from about three times a week to one. Thats fairly significant. Morgan said he still has cravings for fatty type foods. So what??? As long as he eats it in moderation he will be fine, plus he's got a girlfriend who's a vegan who will keep him in line as well. You keep repeating yourself and tell us we dont get it??? What a moron! Yep, Calvin cant think for himself so he takes the company line everytime cause if they can afford to advertise that their food is OK then it must be! AFTER WATCHING "SUPER SIZE ME" AND MICHAEL MOORES 2 MOVIES I REALLY WONDER???? WELL I WAS WONDERING BEFORE TOO, BUT NOW EVEN MORE. I THINK THE SUGGER GOT TO YOUR BRAINS. AN OTHER THING: SO MUCH MONEY IN USA...AND SO MANY HOMELESS. HOW AND WHY!?
WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT "THE AMERICAN WAY"???? I REALLY WONDER!?
THANX FOR THE WORD...FROM SWEDEN.

Why is a Swede on an American website? Doesn't Sweden have their own websites? Is it a Swedish hobby to visit websites on other nations to criticize that nation?
re: Ohhh my God!!! Mr. Big Mac Sep 27, 05:43 PM [ Reply ]
lol... Good answer. And to answer you Tony. Is it a hobby? No, it's just so easy to criticize the Americans and the american nation. Tu be true I have never done this against any other nations. But I have many times done it to the Americans and the American nation.
And I must say, I dont hate americans or anything like that. But you are scary over there. An example: In the move "Super Size me" they show a picture of Jesus to a kid and he thinks it is Bush. Dont you think that is scary.
Damn...you give yourself away like that all the time...thats why it's so easy. And that should be scary to you!!!

Just understand that I dont hate America or americans!!!
I just think that the way you live and treat your own citizens is strange and scary.
I have American friends that I like very much. But I must say that the hate aginst America is groving around Europe...even in sweden. It was not like that for 10 years ago. So why is it like that now? Think about that.
And Sweden will not get attaced by any nation. But if...yes the americans would be helping us. That's becouse Sweden is one of the leading countries in the world when it commes to develop advanced militery systems. USA know that becouse they buy so much of that from Sweden and dont want what hostile to USA to get that. Just as it is with the oil in Iraq.

I agree with Mr. Big Mac, the United States doesn't give two cents about countries that aren't giving them something back. And don't try to deny it. We're in Iraq to help the poor women and the people over there from Saddam, while people in other 3rd world countries are getting treated the same way! Don't let the government fool you, we DON'T care about other people unless we will have some benefit from it. Don't think we're the kindest nation on earth, because if you do- you're wrong.

why can't there be a person, a government or an organsisation criticizing america, only cause you are the "nation number 1 in world" or is it caus you don't like other nations and cultures (that's ironic if you know this word)??? why are you so an arrogant pack, do you really think that an "american website" of a movie thats shown in the whole world in many languages is your property ...
man...you can be so fast in criticizing old fashioned europe but have more crime and unemployment than the poorest country at europe ... you know in western europe noone has to live on the street and starve, our systems are much more democratic and social than yours...

Just because this site is about a movie that was made in America does not make this an exclusively American site. This has been shown all over the world, and reading the newspaper today the film has had an impact, McDonalds profits are down by two thirds over here in the UK.

re: Ohhh my God!!! LeeR Sep 28, 11:45 AM [ Reply ]
Sorry ConnieL, just to point out, McDonalds may be an American founded company - but its actions have a worldwide impact as a multinational organisation. Supersize me may have been made in America, by an American writer/director, based upon an American founded company - but ultimately the film, as does McDonalds, has a worldwide reach. The film quotes "One taste, world wide" which was once a McDonalds advertising tag line, and I presume McDonalds would also have the management philosophy of "One company, one management style world wide". Sure there are going to be slight variations, but Supersize me has just as much relevance in America, as it does here in the UK. McDonalds needs to realise that it has a corporate and social responsibility to the people not just in America, but the rest of the world - and hopefully Supersize Me raises peoples awareness to the issues that are becoming more and more prevalent worldwide.
P.S There is no other English language version of the Supersize Me site (I think), so 'Non Americans' are ultimately going to visit this one if they want more information.

Quick call Morgan, he needs to make another move and save us...oh the humanity
Warning: suburban sprawl may be hazardous to your health.
Monday, September 27, 2004 Posted: 9:28 AM EDT
A report to be released Monday found that people who live in areas with a high degree of sprawl are more likely to report chronic health problems such as high blood pressure, arthritis, headaches and breathing difficulties compared to residents in less sprawled-out areas.
The differences remained even when researchers accounted for factors such as age, economic status and race.
"People who live in more sprawling areas are more likely to have chronic health problems over time," said Roland Sturm, co-author of the report by Rand Corp., a nonprofit research group. "People drive more in these areas, they walk less."
Researchers said the findings suggest that an adult who lives in a sprawling city such as Atlanta, Georgia, will have health characteristics similar to someone four years older, but otherwise similar, who lives in a more compact city like Seattle, Washington.

McDonald's Panned for "Broken McPromise" on Trans Fat
CSPI Mounts Ad Campaign Against Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
A BROKEN McPROMISE
McDonald's has not kept its two-year-old promise to eliminate artificial trans fat from its cooking oil and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is not lovin' it. Today, the nonprofit food-safety and nutrition watchdog group is running a full-page ad in The New York Times urging the fast-food giant to stop frying in artery-clogging partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (PHO). Trans fat is a more powerful promoter of heart disease than any other fat, and PHO is the leading source of trans fat in Americans' diets.
"America's favorite French fries are about to get even better," claimed McDonald's in a 2002 press release announcing that the company would reformulate its cooking oil with less trans fat. McDonald's received tremendous favorable publicity for the move, which the company said was a step toward eliminating trans fat from its cooking oil altogether. But in 2003, the company backtracked with significantly less fanfare. A terse press release stated cryptically that McDonald’s would "extend the timeframe" for the change, which still has not occurred. McDonald's is now being sued in California by BanTransFat.com, Inc. for misleading the public about the abandoned switch.
CSPI's ad, headlined "A broken McPromise," shows a heart attack victim receiving CPR. The ad contains an open letter to Mike Roberts, and urges citizens to visit a CSPI website, www.TransFreeAmerica.org, for more information. "Trans fat causes tens of thousands of heart-disease deaths each year," the ad copy states. "So why did McDonald's break its promise to eliminate trans fat from its cooking oil?"
"Partially hydrogenated oil should not be in the food supply, and the government should revoke its approval of the ingredient," said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. "McDonald's shouldn't wait around for a government ban to go into effect. McDonald's and Mike Roberts should just keep their promise. Considering how harmful partially hydrogenated oil is, it is reckless and irresponsible for McDonald's or any other chain to use it."
CSPI launched TransFreeAmerica in May, when it formally petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the use of PHO in food. Although new labeling rules are encouraging manufacturers of processed foods to switch to safer oils, restaurants are not yet subject to any nutrition labeling requirements and have less incentive to stop using PHOs. A second legal petition that CSPI filed in July asks the FDA to at least require restaurants to disclose on menus or signs that they use partially hydrogenated oils.
"Partially hydrogenated oils may be cheap, but saving a few pennies per pound is not a sufficient reason for McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Applebee's, Krispy Kreme, or any other chain to put its customers at greater risk for premature death," Jacobson said. "If McDonald's in Denmark can switch to a healthier frying oil, so can McDonald's in the USA."
Although small amounts of trans fats occur naturally in beef and dairy foods, most trans fat in Americans' diets comes from PHO. Once thought to be safer than saturated fat, trans fat is now known to have much more adverse effects on blood cholesterol levels. By raising LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, and lowering HDL, or "good" cholesterol, trans fat is responsible for tens of thousands of heart-attack-deaths each year. In 2003, the National Academies' Institute of Medicine concluded that people should consume as little trans fat as possible.
In August, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory

Hi! I hope everyone who sees this documentary gives a good thought to what they eat. I'm from Finland and I found Morgan's comments during his visit here very true. We have serious problems with overweight people and diabetes II and a fastgrowing fast food market here in Finland too, moving towards a similar situation as in the U.S. I think it's very important that someone finally takes the fast food threat seriously, because many have simply laughed at the people suing fast food companies for their obesity. Yes, it's true that we're responsible for what we eat, but the fast food companies should not be allowed to exploit the results of today's hectic society, where families don't have time to have dinner together anymore. And to try to make up for lost time we go to child-friendly places like McD's, as if we're doing something nice for our kids...I also think that because it was possible to sue tobacco companies and win, the fast food companies can't fight all suits off in the long term. Thank you Morgan for opening our eyes to a problem we were aware of, but tried to ignore, just to happily go out and get another burger! I seriously hope your documentary will make a difference!

How are they exploiting them when people make the conscious decision to go there. Playing the victim card is quite sad, however, a consistent trend with the Spurlock crowd. Your good a crying though,
But to answer your question, this movie has made a difference - Morgan’s calculated scam has earned him a significant salary at the expense of your gullible mind. No, not jealously freaks. has anyone read Under A War Torn Sky? Pretty good book about an American Co-Pilot stranded in the middle of nowhere in France. He goes through an Underground-Railroad type of system to get back to England, where his base is, and he fights with the maquis to liberate France. Anyway, you guys should read it.

Super Size Me

37% of American children and adolescents are carrying too much fat and 2 out of every three adults are overweight or obese. Is it our fault for lacking self-control, or are the fast-food corporations to blame? This is the topic documented in fast-food style in “Super Size Me,” the latest Michael Moore documentary.
Oops. Scratch that. Michael Moore didn’t create this fast-food mess; filmmaker Morgan Spurlock did – in a style so similar to Moore’s it’s basically stylistic theft.
Spurlock decides – in a feat of logic defying all reason – that to solve the question of “what to do about this” he’s going to eat a diet of exclusively McDonalds’ food for 30 days. His rules: he has to eat everything on the menu at least once… he can ONLY eat items from the McDonalds menu… and he will “supersize” only when asked (but pretty much whenever he is asked he will).
Spurlock’s health degrades; this is a result about as obvious as that of an experiment depriving a person of food and water and sitting them in the sun on an eighty degree day. Fast food is not healthy food, and eating unhealthy food will result in unhealthy people. Given the high content of saturated fat, it’s an equally self-evident truth that people who eat a lot of fast food will gain weight and, if their diet is offset by an exercise regimen which mostly involves heading to the refrigerator during commercials, will become obese and likely contract Type 2 Diabetes as they age. We do not need a documentary to tell us these facts – but in large part, that is precisely what Spurlock’s film does.
Even when the film departs from the central experiment to analyze the “domestication” of American youth into this high-fat culture via school lunches, Spurlock’s probing fingers only go so deep. They never fail to explain *why* government-subsidized lunches lack healthy content – and Spurlock certainly shies away from the political issues which are the true causes: dramatic cuts in government spending. In fact, those in office who are so upset about America’s trend towards larger waistlines work down the proverbial hall from their budgetary compatriots whose efforts to preserve larger figures for military spending have so significantly cut spending on educational programs, including those that teach youngsters about nutrition and those that feed youngsters health-appropriate foods.
It’s a measure of Spurlock’s inexperience that despite fifteen phone calls to the McDonalds’ Corporation, he was unable to interview a single employee of the company who did NOT work behind the counter at a franchise; Moore would have been staking out the corporate offices until he wheedled his way into Jim Cantalupo’s office (and in an ironic twist entirely ignored by the documentary, Cantalupo died of a massive heart attack in April of this year – but then, I’m willing to bet that he didn’t eat the food served by his company exclusively).
The world needs documentary auteurs who can show us something new – not something obvious. Throughout Spurlock’s picture I repeatedly asked myself three questions: Why does a man volunteer for this experiment… What was he hoping to prove… and how in the hell can he actually enjoy eating McDonalds’ foods day after day? Ultimately, the documentary fails to answer all three questions. It clearly illustrates the problem of American obesity and ultimately fails to prove anything significant beyond the aged wisdom of health practitioners the world over: eat with balance and exercise regularly.
DUH.

Calvin, have you got nothing better to do than pointlessly attack Morgan. You're beginning to look like a corprate stooge.
Why does a man volunteer for this experiment?
He didn't volunteer, it was his idea. And like all great ideas someone was going to do it sooner or later, he just got there first.
What was he hoping to prove?
What we all knew deep down already.
How in the hell can he actually enjoy eating McDonalds’ foods day after day?
It's addictive. You obviously didn't pay much attention to the nutritional and food content parts of the movie.

Wow. The Edge. That's a pretty reputable reviewer. I think I saw his name on the bathroom wall somwhere next to "For a good time call Calvin." Too bad all the A-list reviewers have already raved about the film: Maltin, Ebert, Roeper, Travis.

Eva 1 and Woody are the same person. He is Air Force sergeant Deshan Woods. It appears that he posts most of his messages using Air Force computers during Air Force work hours.

I know it is a blatant plug for my site, but I thought people would like to know about it. We have articles on growing your own vegetables and herbs. We also have a few good food recipes. Might be of intrest to those of you who want to eat REAL food.
Loved the film, just out in England. I have not eaten at MCdonalds for 4 years now, but my mate I went with did. He has now stopped, I think he got a bit frightened.

Hey everybody, despite all the corporate McRobots sent to disrupt this board with McPropaganda, people are engaging in very healthy dialog and debate about wise eating choices and habits. Now I defy anyone, and most certainly McDonald's, to say that debate and dialog, due directly to this Movie, is not a good thing for us all. Morgan Spurlock's art has had a tremendous positive effect on society, what a wonderful thing for an artist to achieve. Let the debates continue my friends...who knows we might learn something? Peace and Love, Joe

Deshan Woods is not a lieutenant. He's a sergeant. A lieutenant would behave the way Woods acts. Sergeants are not behave that way either. He's a disgrace to the Air Force.

Spurlock presents his exercise in excess as validation of the reasoning behind the unsuccessful lawsuit that two obese New York City teenagers filed against McDonald's in 2002. Yet in designing his "experiment," which he admits "may have been a little extreme," Spurlock paid no heed to the central reason the McDonald's lawsuit was dismissed. U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet ruled that "any liability based on over-consumption is doomed if the consequences of such over-consumption are common knowledge....If a person knows or should know that eating copious orders of supersized McDonald's products is unhealthy and may result in weight gain...it is not the place of the law to protect them from their own excesses. Nobody is forced to eat at McDonald's....Even more pertinent, nobody is forced to supersize their meal or choose less healthy options on the menu."
Some of you should pay attention to that, first off, nobody is forcing you to eat McDonald's. Let alone overeat there. People in this country need to start having something called "personal responsibility".
Spurlock easily could have eaten three meals a day at McDonald's while staying below the 2,500 calories his doctor said he needed to maintain his starting weight of 185 pounds. For instance, an Egg McMuffin, orange juice, and coffee for breakfast; a grilled chicken bacon ranch salad and iced tea for lunch; and a double cheeseburger, medium fries, and diet Coke for dinner total fewer than 1,800 calories. By contrast, Spurlock says he consumed some 5,000 calories a day, while deliberately avoiding physical activity. Duh people, figure it out. It doesn't take a genius. It didn't matter one damned wit what the hell he was eating, he would've gained weight.
All in all this is just a publicity stunt. To make it more appealing, he aimed it at one of the larger corporations. Are these corporations responsible for what food of theirs we eat? No. Of course not. To claim so is utter stupidity. If you jump out the window of a department store, is the department store responsible for your injury? Of course not, though some people would like to argue otherwise. McDonald's does provide a nutrient listing of all it's foods. From that, one could plan a healthy diet, of just their foods, combined with exercise (Which any nutritionist will tell you is necessary (actually, it's been added to the recently modified food pyramid)) which will not make you fat. Actually, there are two seperate cases of individuals who ate at McDonald's only for an equal amount of time, and lost weight, decreased their cholestorol, blood pressure, and improved other health factors.
You can accomplish the same thing by never exercising, and eating only 3 steaks per meal every meal for the next 30 days. It's not rocket scientist. So then why do people latch onto it? Simple. They want someone to blame for their problems other than the one responsible: themselves. In the end, this is just a piece of sensationalist sh1t.

re: Sad and pathetic. dennis Sep 26, 03:12 PM [ Reply ]
#1- There's two types of people who will react to this movie. One is the person who comes to a realization that his eating habits suck and evne though we didn't eat as much as Mrgan did over a one month period. We have done it over a 20 year period. We dont blame the corps for what we eat, but we do blame the corps for what they are putting into our food. What about corp responsibility??? Do you think its ok for mcD's to use massive amounts of antibiotics in your beef just because the antibiotics have the peculier side effect of making themk grom faster (of which there is no long term study on the effects of this). Let alone their crappy record on the environment in Brazil.
The second type of person is the one that blames and sues the corp's for their obesity. I bet hardly anyone who debates on this site will agree that we dont want to sue Mc'D's. We just want to educate people on the effects of bad diet. Was Morgans diet over the top, of course, but it made the point in far more effectual manner than the typical American who is slowing losing the battle of the bulge. Should we change the laws to not allow lawsuits? Hell no! Throw out the frivolous ones, but what happens when the long term effects of eating genetically altered meat and vegies, plus the steroids and antibiotics. Corps would love to shut down any type of future lawsuit right now.

McDonalds specializes in the exploitation of children every day to fill their coffers, peddling obesity, heart disease, and diabetes to youngsters. Are those the kids your talking about?
