McDonald's digs in to hold spot at Clinic
Monday, November 22, 2004
Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove wants to rid the nation's premier heart hospital of its McDonald's franchise - purveyor of artery clogging burgers and fries.

But McDonald's, which contends it now offers lots of healthy choices and will work with the Clinic to tweak its menu, isn't "lovin' it."

McDonald's corporate veep Marty Ranft defended the franchise, and vowed in a letter to Cosgrove that "McDonald's has no intention of terminating" the remaining 10 years on its lease.

Ranft enclosed a letter to him from the Clinic franchisee, Turan Strange, who pleaded for corporate help, noting Pizza Hut already was shown the door. "Cleveland Clinic security guards escorted Pizza Hut's managers and workers out of the Clinic. I cannot afford to wait until my employees have been locked out of my restaurant to resolve this issue with the Clinic."

The Clinic still insists McDonald's must go

McDonald's saying they now offer healthy choices is like saying that water now comes in dry.

That being said, the clinic has absolutely no right telling people what they can and cannot eat. They can suggest, they can encourage, they can strongly speak out against...but under no circumstance can they force me to not eat somewhere.

I read a similar article in which employees of this clinic said that, although McDonald's is not the healthiest choice, it is an affordable alternative, since they do offer salads as well. The push to drive McDonald's out is apparantly being driven by a doctor whose higher salary allows him to purchase healthier, but more expensive food at a separate food court.

Whats wrong with McDonalds? Nothing. What's wrong is the attitude of some of the people who eat there and the AMOUNT they eat.

To eat McDonalds or not to eat McDonalds. That is the question!

One question you should ask yourselves is this. Why has the McBurger (or Whatever they call it) decreased in size, but the amount you pay has gone up!

I will freely admit that I do not enter McDonalds establishments whatsoever. there are a number of reasons.

1) I find the smell makes me queezy.
2) I much prefer my meat to have been mooing, squealing or baaing and coughing up blood the night before - that way I know it's fresh!
3) This to me is the most important.....

I'm a former army officer who has given quite a few years service to Queen and Country. I've served in quite a few trouble spots over the years and done more than one shooting tour. The Americans on the site might know of a Charitable group called NORAID. Quite a few people give money to this "Charity" while not being aware of what it actually is.

NORAID (pronounced NOR-AID) is the Irish Republican Army's financial fund raising arm. This is statement of fact and I had several briefings on its activities etc before taking up tours of Northern Ireland. Quite a substantial donations to NORAID comes from.... McDonalds Restaurants.

NORAID's fund rasing activities goes towards buying munitions and weapons to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) which are then smuggled in to be used in terrorist activities both against uniformed soldiers and civillians. I had two men killed in Northern Ireland by weapons provided by NORAID and their financial supporters.

People reading this might say.. "So what?"

So what!

you go and tell a young wife with a new born baby that their husband was killed by a terrorist. You go and tell her that the terrorist blew that soldiers brains all over your battledress while your patrol was trying to help some injured in a car crash that the terrorists had caused to draw the troops in so that they could kill them.

I had to go and tell a young wife with a baby that her husband was not coming home. One of the worst jobs I have ever had to do. Over my career I have to do it quite a few times. Each time it gets harder.

McDonalds..... you can keep it - I'm not loving it!

I don't know what planet you occupy, but if McLard is renting space in MY building, I get to decide whether or not they stay there.
It is a basic fallacy that you're entitled to junk food whenever and wherever you want it. If the clinic or hospital owns the space
- THROW THE BUMS OUT!

I think it is not merely newsworthy but (eeek) common sense that fast food restaurants NOT be allowed (by the owners of the property, not law)
to operate in hospitals, clinics, schools or any other place that purports to support intelligent and healthy behavior.

I assume you mean "I" in the sense of hospital as an institution, not the one heart specialist who seems to have a problem with this.

I did not say that they are not entitled to rent to whoever they want, but the fact remains, they already rented out to McDonalds, a company which has a decade left on their lease.

I see healthy and intelligent behavior is no longer being educated and taught to make your own decisions, but to be told what to do since you're too stupid to do it yourself.
