McDonald's operator pays $140,000 for youth employment violations

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - An operator of McDonald's franchise restaurants in Birmingham, Gadsden and Anniston has paid $101,915 in civil penalties and $38,880 in back wages to 574 employees for youth employment law violations, federal regulators said Tuesday.

CLP Corporation also agreed to future compliance with the child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, according to a news release by the U.S. Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division.

An investigation found that minors operated trash compactors and drove motor vehicles at some restaurant locations. Some managers allegedly let 14- and 15-year-olds work more than three hours or later than 7 p.m. on school days. The investigation also found that some employees at the company's 44 locations had not been paid for all hours worked.

The company agreed to post warnings on all hazardous equipment, implement a self-audit program and provide training on youth employment provisions,

A media relations official with the company had no immediate comment when contacted Tuesday.
